On our standard balconies, its always been our policy to use convex handrail for the top section, as in the picture. The trouble is that it is much more expensive than flat bar. Because all balconies need to protrude from the wall by 80mm. It needs a rather time consuming welded mitre joint.

Replacing the convex rail with flat bar, means its cheaper on material content. As well as quicker construction time . Coupling this with 12mm round uprights instead of square, also reduces material costs. Meaning there are savings to be had, allowing me to introduce and cheaper Juliet balcony railing.
