So this building of the site has been going on for months now. I finally decide to keep a kind of update log. There will be several updates in rapid succession, as i explain the last 6 months. then it will drop to every few weeks or so. Just in case any one has insomnia and wants to bore themselves to sleep. It is as much notes to my self where i think i have gone wrong. As well as notes for updates and changes that need to be made. Being as this is done in my spare time, it can go days or weeks between me working on the site. So there are a few reminders here for myself so i know where i am.
I have come across a lot of challenges doing this. Trying to explain 30 years of experience in wrought iron design in a few web pages isn’t easy. keeping everything linear and not running off in a tangent is difficult. The principal for a gate are the same as for a railing but with differences. This creates an issue if some one has read through the gates section, then goes to read the railing section. There is a lot of duplication, which makes for bad reading. This has cause me to scrap pages and rewrite them several times.
The principle idea is so simple. you take a plain gate or railing, use pre manufactured parts, to create decorative bars. In your design you replace some of those plain bars with decorative ones to create a design. In theory it is simple, in practice there are a few issues. It is how best to explain those issues. Finding the most logical and linear way of doing it.
I suspect video is the answer to a lot of the problem. I just did a simple internet search “how long to read lord of the rings”, google AI claims about 40 – 45 hours for the trilogy, yet you can watch all 3 films in a day. 9 hours verses 40 hours. If i take that information, i can almost assume that if i could get some ones attention for 15 mins, i can get 4 times the amount of information a crossed via video than i can via reading. I also know that video will keep peoples attention for longer.
So now i have opened up a whole can of worms (i never knew worms came in cans). Lots of problems with video, if i host the videos on this website, i will exceed the allowed space for the website. This means i have to buy more hosting space. instead of costing me £200 a year for this website, it is going to climb in price to perhaps £500. That is starting to get expensive for what i perhaps consider as a vanity project. When i am not even sure how many people will use it. The other alternative is to use Youtube, this doesn’t cost me anything. but you get adverts in the videos. i just link out to a Youtube video in the website and do what they call embeding it. So you watch it from this site.
Video is going to take way more time and money to do. Whilst i am sure much can be done with a mobile phone at least at the start. Ultimately a video recorder is going to be needed, which is more expense. Whilst i might be able to crash out a web page in an evening or two. The equivalent video content is going to take much longer, as it will take lots of planning in advance. It kind of at this point if you wonder if you should just delete the website and hope no one ever knew it existed. To save myself a whole lot of time, money and effort
